Wake Up The Dream - Secret Agent 23 Skidoo

Kids music? I mean yea, on the surface but I’d say perhaps one of the most creative “family music” albums out there. It’s Hip Hop if you aren’t familiar with Secret Agent 23 Skidoo and his catalog, but it’s so much more. While all of his records have themes this is a concept album that like a good Pixar movie has messages for both the child and the parent. Basically it is an exploration of dreams. The dreams we have at night, the dreams we have during the day, the dreams we have about changing the past and the dreams we have about shaping our future. This journey is guided by your dream radio DJ’s Sub C and Uncle Unc (your subconscious and your unconscious respectively.) Every couple songs the DJs jump in to tell you about what you have heard, what you are about to hear and exchange some punny banter. Here is how we made it.

Most of it was recorded in one 12 hour day in the API Studio at Echo Mountain Recording which in itself it a feat of recording. The backing tracks are a super group of a live band from asheville. We did all the vocals later and the DJ interludes and radio jingles and other incidentals but the meat of it was a single day. The band though… You can’t do something like this without an amazing band. It required not only musicianship but flexibility, creativity and stamina. They had all of this. We went track by track first dialing in a sonic vibe specific to the track(everything from Amy Winehouse aesthetic to Stranger Things), then working out the arrangement, and finally doing a few takes to get the keeper. We are talking like 45 minutes a track. It was Drums, Bass, Guitar, Keys, and a 4 piece horn section. That is a tremendous amount of coordination and the band killed it. They worked out tones and change parts on the fly and then nailed the song in a couple or three takes.

Obviously this session was moving very fast, in the process and being so focused on getting the songs done, Cactus(23 Skidoo) and I temporarily forgot that there were several song transitions that joined two songs together that hadn’t been composed yet. We remembered as we were finishing the last song and clapping backs with just under an hour left of the session. So on the spot, with something like 45 minutes of studio time left and the energy level of the musicians flagging, Cactus quickly explained the transition in his that was in his head and the musicians huddled together and compared each set of the songs’ tempo and key to try to find a way to connect them. The result was something that certainly did not sound as if it had been composed in 5 or 10 minutes. You’ll have to listen to know what I mean, but what they did was make one song change into another in the weird way that dreams move from one to another in a way that seems chaotic but is in fact deeply ordered. Perhaps the time constraints were important to keep it from being overworked as they sometimes are, but it definitely worked. Each song is unique, fun and creative and if you haven’t experienced the genius of family music by 23 skidoo rendered by some of the absolute best musicians Asheville has to offer, well it’s time to wake up to this dream. I just had my second child 20 years after my first. My son had court side seats for the creation of the entire catalog of 23 skidoo magic and he now can word for word almost every lyric on every record. I can’t wait to walk my daughter through this musical adventure.

So join us, if you dare, on a journey to center of your mind…. And bring yo kids!

Notes from the engineer #1

I’m gonna try to actually do a blog maybe. I’m not gonna put a periodic expectation on myself because that will fail. But every so often I’m gonna pick a record that I worked on and write a little bit about making it. No juicy stories or anything the artist wouldn’t want written but instead insights into the process and some technical stuff that recoding needs might like. Anyway here goes.

Watchhouse - Duos

I’m starting with this one because the recording process was so simple and the results are so amazing.

The backstory of this record if you are not familiar with it, is that it is a re-recording of the full band self titled Watchhouse record but just Andrew and Emily. Hence the title “Duos.” When I recorded “Such Jubilee” (the band was called Mandolin Orange then.) I thought it was very important to record as much of it as possible with Andrew and Emily in a room together with no isolation and with them as close to each as they would be if they were playing together in their living room. I was inspired by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings who I think are excellent at making records like this. It totally worked. I’m assuming that is why they came to me for this duos album.

I mentioned the simplicity of this recording and here is what I mean. The album cover shows it all. Two people and two mics. However, these aren’t ordinary mics or ordinary people. We used 2 RCA 44’s in a Blumlien pattern. Really its an X/Y pattern, but they are ribbon mics and so their inherent bidirectional nature make it a Blumlein(this is the recording nerd part). The RCA 44 is arguably the best ribbon mic ever made. Basically each mic pointed at a player but the combination captures the room as well from the back sides of the mics. I find this technique to simultaneously be natural and super real. While this is a cool technique, it’s capturing 2 voices and 2 instruments all at once so it relies heavily on the musician’s ability to respond to what the mic is doing and adjust their position to it in order to create focus on either the voice or the instrument depending on what is needed in the song. Andrew and Emily did this masterfully. Look at the record cover again. Now close your eyes and imagine you are sitting on the floor between them. That is what this record sounds like. It isn’t over worked, we mixed the whole album in a day, there are 1 or 2 overdubs (harmonica I think), the only reverb is the room and a little bit of the EMT 140 plate reverb we have in the church at Echo Mountain, and we really only did a few takes of each song to get the ones that are on the record.

To me, it is one of the more gratifying ways to make a record. It is a real moment in time that is trapped forever(hopefully) so that all of you can experience what I got to experience over and over again.

So my note on this one is that if you have huge talent in the room, make sure that you don’t over complicate the process. Engineering is an art not a competition and sometimes too many brush strokes hides the beauty.

Echo Mountain is Moving in 2026!!

We have broken ground on what is to be the next chapter of the Echo Mountain story. It is bittersweet as we hate to say goodbye to the fabulous Church and API studios in which so many incredible records have been made, but the studios we are building on a mountaintop 20 mins north of town are going to be epic. We are taking everything we have learned from 20 years of running a studio and making records and applying it to a from the ground up studio construction. IT WILL BE SICK. The main room designs are basically complete and we are getting more excited by the day imagining all the cool stuff that will happen there. There will be lodging on site for those who want it making it a creative retreat situation for out of towners or a beautiful day trip for WNC artists. Echo Mountain 2.0! We are still taking bookings in the original Echo Mountain until September 2025 so don’t miss your chance to cut one last record before the OG Echo goes away.

Steve gets to work building the new studios

Steep Canyon Rangers and Boyz II Men

So I recorded and mixed this single with Micheal Selverne that was originally a Steep Canyon Rangers collaboration with the Asheville Symphony but Mike had this crazy idea to get Boyz II Men to sing on it. Well, He made it happen and it’s cool and I sure am proud of the recording and the mix. Here is the Music video they shot in Nashville together with our mix behind it.

Best of 2016

So every year Asheville's Mountain Xpress does a best of the town survey. It includes everything from best restaurants to bars to artists and bands. This year they added some new categories one of which included best producer/engineer. I won! Which rocks. I love this town and apparently it loves me back. So nice for my love to not be unrequited.

This spring has been killer

Where do I start.  A good place is with the Asheville symphony.   For the last year I have been working on a record that is a collaborative effort between the Asheville symphony and 8 regional bands to create what has become a beautiful piece of music that crosses genres and generations. Not only was I afforded the opportunity to record singles with many of my favorite people from Asheville and the surrounding area but also forging new and wonderful relationships with the awesome gem of a symphony that we somehow have in this small town of Asheville.  I say somehow, but the more time I spend with the symphony director David Whitehill, the more I understand what the somehow is...  Its him.  This idea to put local bands together with the local symphony was the brainchild of my close friend, colleague, partner in crime, and all around badass Jessica Tomasin and David. They made it happen, and it happened.  It happened big time. They brought on Michael Selverne to oversee the musical production.  Michael, a seasoned pro in the music business, with decades of experience putting together major productions brought his A game and a bunch of great arrangers, copyists, and all the other unseen cogs in the machine that it takes to make something like this come off right.  The time I spent in the studio with Jessica, Michael, David, and all these amazing musicians was something I will never forget.  The results speak for themselves so all of my puffery is really unnecessary.  All you really need to do I check it out.  http://ashevillesymphony.org/sessions

Also, this spring I produced a record with an amazing Asheville band called The Get Right Band.   We spend many days in the studio making what is some of my best engineering work and what I think the band will agree is is their best musical effort to date.  I just wanna say that I love these guys.  I love the music they make, but I also love the people they are.   Making this record was not only a fulfilling creative experience but also a great fucking time.  We laughed at each other so much.  And In my mind, if you are creating and also having a ball, well it really doesn't get much better than that.  This record is not out yet and won't be until august but I can't wait for everyone to hear it because if you have half the good time listening to it that we had making it then we are all winners. Here is the first single from the record.   https://soundcloud.com/the-get-right-band/whos-in-charge-radio-edit

Annnnnnd, for all the kids out there I bring you yet another installment of the incomparable Secret Agent 23 Skidoo.  Yea thats right.  One of the things I am most proud of is working on Hip Hop for kids.  You know why? Because it ain't just for kids.  I am strong believer in the philosophy that kids don't need their music dumbed down. Screw Barney and the Telletubbies, and the Fresh Beat Band and all that other lowest common denominator crap I have been exposed to as a parent.  I mean its fine and all but we can do better, and we did.  Again. Like we always do.  This 23 Skidoo record made no compromises.  Yea we even pulled a 17 hour day right before mastering maybe because it had to be right.  Because we care.  We care about the kids and them having music that is worthy of them, but we also care about the parents that are gonna have to listen to it a thousand freaking times.  So we made sure it was right.  And it is.  It will be released in July right close to my birthday, because yea.  http://secretagent23skidoo.com/

Steep Canyon Rangers Album Release Aug 28th!

I am psyched for the release of the latest Steep Canyon Rangers album "Radio."  I engineered and mixed this album with Jerry Douglas producing and I just love how it came out.  There is a song on here to fit most anyone's taste and the collection is well rounded.

We worked on it in a handful of sessions spanning about 6 months and really tried to focus on capturing how well the band plays together.  Unlike many modern records, most of what you are hearing went down just as you would see live, often with a majority of the band actually in the same room with minimal or no isolation.  This approach matches the bands down-to-earth nature and the result speaks for itself.

It was a total pleasure working with Jerry Douglas.  His musicianship, production chops, and how much fun he is to be around were a huge factor in the making of this recording.
